Introduction: Overheating, an emergency not to be ignored
An abnormally hot Rotax engine is an alarm that should never be ignored. Whether you're on a Sea-Doo jet ski or a Williams Sportjet, Turbojet, or Minijet tender, untreated overheating can lead within minutes from simple exhaust line damage to irreparable engine failure—blown head gaskets, warped cylinder liners, melted pistons. Yet, in the vast majority of cases, the cause is simple to identify and correct if you know where to look.
How to detect overheating on your Sea-Doo or Williams?
Signs of engine overheating are usually clear:
- Temperature warning light on dashboard (or audible alarm)
- Error code and fault description: displayed on the screen (see our article on deciphering Rotax and WILLIAMS tender error codes)
- Progressive loss of power — the engine enters limp mode
- White smoke or burning smell from the engine compartment
- Abnormally high exhaust temperature — the exhaust outlet water is scalding hot or absent
- "Strainer broken" error code displayed on models equipped with a diagnostic system
⚠️ Absolute rule: as soon as a temperature warning light or alarm appears, switch off the engine immediately and tow the vessel. Continuing to operate will irreversibly worsen the damage.
💡 Pro Tip: On recent Sea-Doo models, the iTC (intelligent Throttle Control) system automatically reduces power if overheating is detected. If your craft suddenly loses power for no apparent reason, check the engine temperature before anything else.
1. Seawater circuit problems
The Rotax engine is cooled by an open seawater circuit. If the water intake is obstructed—algae, sand, plastic, fishing net sucked into the propulsion unit—the flow of seawater used for cooling drops sharply and the temperature rises rapidly. Here are the points to check in order:
- Towing valve: if your vessel is equipped with one, ensure it is in the "navigation" position (open position).
- Seawater filter (raw water filter / strainer): this is the first thing to inspect. A clogged filter is enough to cause complete overheating. Also, check that the plastic bowl is not cracked.
- Intake grate: it must be clear; nothing should obstruct the passage of seawater. Check that no foreign objects are stuck (plastic bag, rope, tow rope, floating debris, etc.).
- Propulsion unit: disengage the reverse and steering cables, then remove the entire jet pump unit (jet pump rebuild kit) for inspection. Remove any foreign objects stuck around the impeller.
- Seawater hoses and exhaust hoses: check that no hose is pinched, cut, or cracked, especially at the clamps. Replace hoses if necessary.
- Exhaust manifold and catalytic converter: the exhaust manifold (or exhaust terminal, or catalytic converter insert on Williams tenders) has a double wall through which seawater circulates. Rinse it regularly because the very narrow seawater passages can become clogged over time. Open and clean the seawater passages. Also, check for any water leaks from this part, which is subjected to very high heat and corrosion stresses.
- Temperature sensor (seawater circuit): check that the sensor on the exhaust manifold is properly connected to the harness, clean, and intact.
- Exhaust manifold and muffler: check that these two parts are correctly connected to the exhaust system and properly supplied with seawater via the small secondary hose dedicated to them. Check that they are not perforated.
After intervention, remember to perform a complete fresh water flush of the circuit to remove any residue.
💡 Pro Tip: Before each outing, visually check that water is flowing from the tell-tale indicator as soon as you start the engine. The absence of a stream of water within the first 30 seconds is an immediate alarm signal—turn off the engine and diagnose before operating.
2. Coolant circuit problems
If the heat alarm indicates coolant overheating, perform the following checks:
- Coolant level: check the level in the expansion tank and top up if necessary.
- Overflow hose: check that the overflow hose connected to the expansion tank cap is not kinked or pinched by a cable tie.
- Leak in the engine bilge: check for any coolant leaks in the bilge.
- Seawater/coolant heat exchanger (intercooler): if you have access and the skills, remove the exchanger and test it. The two circuits that make up this part must remain strictly sealed from each other. Pressurize one of the two circuits and check that water does not escape from the other. Repeat the operation for the other circuit. Replace the exchanger if the two circuits mix. Note: on some Sea-Doo jet skis, this exchanger can take the form of a "ride plate" located under the propulsion unit.
- Coolant color: it should be vibrant, its original color. If it has become very light, seawater has mixed in and diluted the fluid. If it has become darker, there is rust in the circuit or exhaust gases—a possible sign of a failing head gasket.
- Thermostat: a thermostat stuck in the closed position prevents coolant circulation. Replace it if necessary.
- Thermostat housing / water pump: made of a plastic derivative, this housing can deform over time and heat. Check for any traces of coolant (fresh or dried) on the outside of the engine. Note: pink coolant can leave pale pink or even white traces—be vigilant.
- Temperature sensor (coolant circuit): check that the sensor on the engine block is properly connected to the harness, clean, and intact.

Engine harness: check that all sensors are correctly connected and that the engine harness is intact, with no exposed wires.
What to do if your engine has overheated?
- Allow to cool completely before opening the engine hatch (risk of burns).
- Check the oil level: overheating can cause a leak or degradation of the engine oil.
- Inspect cooling hoses for any signs of swelling, cracking, or disconnection.
- Check the seawater filter and clean it if necessary.
- Do not restart until you have identified and corrected the cause—a second overheating on an already weakened engine can be fatal.
Preventive maintenance: avoid overheating before it happens
- Clean the seawater filter at the beginning of each season and after any navigation in dirty waters.
- Replace the thermostat and its cover every 5 years or at the first signs of malfunction.
