What is a lambda sensor?


The lambda sensor (or oxygen sensor or O2 sensor) is an essential component of the engine management system. It measures the oxygen content in the exhaust gases to allow the ECU (engine control unit) to adjust the air/fuel mixture in real time for optimal combustion.

How does a lambda sensor work?

The lambda sensor generates a variable electrical voltage based on the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gases:

  • Rich mixture (too much fuel): low oxygen content → high voltage (~0.8 V)
  • Lean mixture (too much air): high oxygen content → low voltage (~0.1 V)
  • Stoichiometric mixture (ideal): voltage oscillating around 0.45 V

The ECU uses this data to correct the injection and maintain an optimal air/fuel ratio (λ = 1).

Different types of lambda sensors

1. Wideband lambda sensor

Used on modern engines, it precisely measures the air/fuel ratio over a wide range. Essential for engine mapping and tuning.

2. Narrowband lambda sensor

Simpler, it only indicates whether the mixture is rich or lean. Common on older vehicles.

Symptoms of a faulty lambda sensor

  • Check engine light on (OBD codes P0130 to P0167)
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Loss of engine power
  • High pollutant emissions (failed technical inspection)
  • Unstable or irregular idle

How to diagnose a lambda sensor?

Diagnosis is done using an OBD2 scanner (B.U.D.S software), a multimeter, or more simply by noting the error code displayed on the screen:

  1. Connect your BUDS software and read the fault codes (see our article listing all ROTAX fault codes)
  2. Check the sensor's output voltage with a multimeter (should oscillate between 0.1 V and 0.9 V)
  3. Check the response time: a healthy sensor reacts quickly to variations
  4. Visually inspect the sensor: black deposits (rich mixture), white deposits (additives or salt deposits if the exhaust is perforated)

Replacing the lambda sensor

Replacement is an accessible operation with the right tools:

  • Lambda sensor wrench (22 mm or 7/8")
  • Penetrating oil if the sensor is stuck
  • Recommended tightening torque: 40 to 55 Nm

Tip: Always replace the sensor when the engine is warm to facilitate unscrewing, and be careful not to damage the wiring during removal. As much as possible, do not touch the sensor head to avoid distorting its measurements.
