How to replace the oil filter on your Rotax ACE 903, 1503, or 1603 jet ski?

Comment remplacer le filtre à huile de votre jet ski Rotax ACE 903, 1503 ou 1603 ?

Why regularly replace the oil filter?

The oil filter is an essential component of the Rotax ACE engine. It retains impurities, metallic particles, and combustion residues circulating in the lubrication system. A clogged or worn filter can lead to insufficient lubrication, premature wear of internal parts, and in the most severe cases, engine failure.

For Rotax ACE 903, ACE 1503, and ACE 1603 engines equipping Sea-Doo Spark jet skis and WILLIAMS inflatable tenders (Turbojet, Sportjet, Minijet), oil filter replacement is recommended at each oil change, i.e., every 50 hours of navigation or once per season.

Necessary equipment

  • Rotax ACE compatible oil filter (ref. BRP 956744 or equivalent)
  • Wrench with an E8 external Torx socket
  • Suction pump (manual or electric)
  • Oil drain pan
  • Clean rags
  • 4T engine oil recommended by the manufacturer: BRP 5w40 synthetic

Oil filter replacement steps

1. Prepare the engine

Run the engine for 1 to 2 minutes to warm up the oil and facilitate draining. Then turn off the engine and let it cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Place a drain pan under the filter.

2. Drain the oil by suction

Using a suction pump (manual or electric), insert the tube into the oil dipstick well until it reaches the bottom of the crankcase. Aspirate all the used oil. This method is particularly suitable for Rotax ACE engines where bottom access is limited. Empty the contents into an approved drain pan and dispose of the used oil at an approved collection point.

3. Remove the old filter

Using an E8 external Torx socket, unscrew the filter cover counter-clockwise. (1 screw for 1503 and 1603 engines / 3 screws for ACE 903 engines) Be careful of residual oil that may drip. Thoroughly clean the contact surface on the engine block.

4. Prepare the new filter

Lightly coat the O-ring of the new filter with clean engine oil. This ensures a good seal and facilitates the next disassembly.

5. Install the new filter

Insert the new filter by hand until it makes contact, then tighten it an additional quarter turn. Do not use tools for the final tightening to avoid damaging the seal.

6. Fill with new oil

Pour the recommended amount of oil through the filler cap (located on top of the engine). Use XPS 5W40 BRP synthetic oil. Indicative capacities: ~2.84 L for the ACE 903 and ~4.5 L for the ACE 1503/1603 (drain + filter). Check the level with the dipstick after filling.

7. Check for leaks

Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for leaks around the filter. Check the oil level and adjust if necessary.

Which oil filter to choose for your Rotax ACE?

To ensure the compatibility and performance of your engine, use exclusively an original BRP filter (ref. 956744) or an equivalent quality filter certified compatible with Rotax ACE 903, 1503, and 1603 engines.

Poor quality filters can pose risks of leakage or insufficient filtration, endangering the longevity of your engine.
