Why Replace Pistons and Their Rings?
Worn or damaged pistons or rings can cause a loss of compression, abnormal oil consumption, and cylinder deterioration. The cause of overheating or lubrication failure must be investigated before reassembly.
- Loss of compression or uneven values between cylinders.
- Loss of power or difficult starting.
- Blue smoke and excessive oil consumption.
- Scratched pistons, broken rings, or damaged ring grooves upon disassembly.
During a rebuild, have the cylinders measured and their wear limits checked before selecting the size. Replacement depends on the condition of the engine and the manufacturer's specifications, not a fixed 50-hour interval.
