Why Replace the Connecting Rod?

The connecting rod is one of the most stressed parts of the Rotax 4-TEC engine. Subject to extreme mechanical stresses during each engine cycle, it can deform or fracture due to lack of lubrication, overheating, or detonation. Here are common symptoms of a connecting rod nearing the end of its life:

  • Dull or metallic knocking sound at idle or during acceleration
  • Abnormal vibrations felt in the chassis
  • Loss of compression in one or more cylinders
  • Presence of metal shavings in the engine oil
  • Sudden engine shutdown or inability to start

We recommend replacing connecting rods during any complete lower engine overhaul, or as soon as any of these symptoms appear. Preventive replacement at the beginning of the season, after 150 hours of navigation, helps prevent costly engine failure.
