Why Replace Connecting Rods?

Connecting rods are among the most stressed parts of the Rotax 4-TEC engine. Subjected to extreme mechanical loads during every engine cycle, they can deform or fracture in the event of lack of lubrication, overheating, or detonation. Here are common symptoms of one or more failing connecting rods:

Dull knocking or metallic sound at idle or during acceleration
Abnormal vibrations felt in the hull
Loss of compression in one or more cylinders
Presence of metal shavings in the engine oil
Sudden engine failure or inability to start

We recommend replacing all connecting rods during any complete bottom-end engine overhaul, or as soon as any of these symptoms appear. A preventive replacement at the beginning of the season, after 150 hours of operation, helps avoid costly engine failure.
